How to Layer Light for Every Room in Your Home

A single overhead fixture is rarely enough to make a room feel finished. Good lighting design works in three layers.

Ambient light fills the room generally — recessed cans, a central fixture. Task light is focused and functional — under-cabinet strips, a reading lamp, pendant lights over an island. Accent light adds mood and highlights — picture lights, LED coves, a statement chandelier.

The mistake we see most often is relying on ambient light alone. A kitchen with only recessed cans and no under-cabinet task lighting will always feel flat, no matter how nice the cabinetry is.
